Split: A Divided America

Posted by John Wellington Ennis

As an election documentary filmmaker, I really appreciated this film by Kelly Nyks, and not just because it has a lot of the same obscure stock footage as FREE FOR ALL!

Split: A Divided America travels America in search of common ground and evolving discourse between the Red and Blue State mindset. Determinedly non-partisan while exploring sides of the culture wars, this is a genteel and genuine effort to elevate our civil discourse. Though this film was made in anticipation of the 2008 election, it is perhaps more relevant than ever.

As Long As @Whitehouse Is Asking…

Posted by John Wellington Ennis

This just in from the Whitehouse Twitter feed:

“@whitehouse: A million followers – nice. What would you like to see more of from this feed? Photos? Quotes? Cowbell? Tell us @whitehouse”

As long as the White House is employing hipsters to Tweet on the weekend looking for input, tell them that after they check out “District 9″ that they pass on our polite demands for some public healthcare, dude.

Where Do They Get These People?

Posted by John Wellington Ennis

Now that people are starting to ponder where the hell Reality TV contestants come from, it is worth sharing an Instant Film I made several years ago that is funny and a little prescient.

The Big One

To the delight of many and disdain of many more comes the new Michael Moore film, Capitalism: A Love Story.

I am clearly of the generation that has been influenced by Michael Moore as a filmmaker, and I have admired many of his films and TV shows.  I know he is ludicrously vilified by the right, and defended by his legions of fans who revere their working-class hero.  While I will generally agree with his politics, I might cringe at how he can sometimes deal from a stacked deck in his rhetoric and movies.

I suggest watching the intriguing documentary Manufacturing Dissent, made by two Canadian filmmakers supporting Moore who ended up finding many exaggerations or contrivances in his films that they documented.  They eventually meet Michael Moore in person, and judiciously appraise his good intentions but dubious credibility in some of the complex issues he has adopted.   Read More »

Single Payer Smackdown

Posted by John Wellington Ennis

In this maelstrom of misinformation on health care, it is inspiring to see an elected official get the story out on HR 676, Rep. John Conyer’s bill for single-payer health care reform.  Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY, 9) steps up.  Give him props at www.friendsofweiner.com. Joe Scarborough continues to be a dumb ass, and this Mika chick just sits there with her arms crossed, huffing, scowling like their guest is misbehaving and embarrassing her.

Is He White Enough Yet?

Posted by John Wellington Ennis

President Obama holds a White House ceremony honoring the winner of NASCAR, the pit crew, the car, mourns a passing of a NASCAR great, gives props to veterans, and waxes poetic about how American NASCAR is.

President Obama proceeded to rip the sleeves off his shirt, chug a six pack of Busch Beer, park the race car on his front lawn, and blame the government for everything.

“The main obstacle this time in overhauling health care is, well…you’re black, Mr. President.”
