Colonel Bruce Hinton, R.I.P.

Pilot, Patriot, Profane Grandfather.

My grandfather, U.S. Air Force Colonel Bruce Hinton (Retired), just passed away at almost 90 years old. He was a successful pilot and officer while quite young, and distinguished himself in aviation history in the Korean War. I am deeply thankful that the History Channel did this piece on his famous dogfight — for interviewing him in his waning years, for the effective use of animation and attention to detail in this story, and for helping his memory live on.

    Hello John,

Thank you for placing this page regarding your grandfather. And at this date I can only thank you for his service to his country. Sorry for your loss.

In a 1953 issue of Stars and Stripes newspaper, it mentions Captain Bruce Hinton ( later to become Lt. Col.) having the most photographed object at Rhine Main AFB. He designed the car with the Spohn Carosserie in Ravensburg, Germany.

I own a Spohn custom built car. I first saw it on the far South Side of Chicago in 1957. I don’t know if it has any connection to your grandfather’s car except extremely few cars were customized by the Spohn coachbuilders.

I am sincerely hoping a few photos of your grandfather’s Spohn exist among your family, hopefully one of him with the car. If you will respond to me, I can show you photos of my car. This is noteworthy: Spohn customs were known for their Sabre statement tails and as you well know the Sabre jet shootdown of a MiG by your grandfather put him in the history books.

    Thanks,
    Wayne Graefen
