Muhammad Ali is an Ennis Descendant!

“The Greatest,” a.k.a. Cassius Clay, a.k.a. Muhammad Ali, a.k.a. Champ, is not only of Irish descent, but from the pretty little town of Ennis, in Western Ireland.



I myself have been to the scenic Ennis in County Clare, and while struggling to decipher James Joyce’s Ulysses, I happened upon a reference to the main character Leopold Bloom’s mother having committed suicide in Ennis, at the hotel I was at. That was crazy.

Also crazy: being a distant relative of the black three-time heavyweight champ who adopted Islam and got stripped of his title by the Supreme Court for refusing to go to Vietnam. I got to see Ali at his Hollywood Star dedication, but this plaque dedication would have been cooler. Let’s hear it for the Black Irish!
