Truth & Honor in Government?

Posted by John Wellington Ennis

Some Birther just told me over Twitter that by posting a gag birth certificate for Obama that I am “Mocking those that want truth and honor in government.”

If the Birthers really did want truth, they might apply actual standards of truth. Instead, it is a transparent game of denying what you don’t like and scraping together anything that supports what you wish were true.

To that end, it should be expected that those desperate to make their case plausible will try claiming the high road: honor. When a Birther defends their quixotic quest to disprove recent history, “honor in government” means a white guy in government.

Because seriously, did these people not notice the lack of honor and truth in government until there was a black guy in charge? Was everything else honorable and truthful before? Because if one was motivated by truth and honor, there would have been a lot more pressing issues than trying to remove Obama on a bogus technicality. Like, say, any other issue.

It is theater for the absurd: Birthers will refute any official paper offered to them. If Obama actually knew where his “long-form birth certificate” was and put it out, we already know what their response would be:

“It’s fake. I don’t care if carbon dating confirms the paper is from 1961 and has Hawaiian DNA on it and a surviving nurse who witnessed it. I know better because I wasn’t there, I’m not from Hawaii, I didn’t know who Barack Obama was until 2006, and I automatically distrust him and know he’s pulling a con over the whole world even though ALL EVIDENCE POINTS TO THE CONTRARY.”

In her already classic meltdown on MSNBC, Orly Taitz offers as evidence (beyond the debunked birth certificate forged to ridicule the Birthers) that Obama’s mom could have gotten his birth in newspaper announcements without giving birth in Hawaii. If she lied then, why, this is the perfect crime!

To hide behind the cause of seeking truth and honor in government is as disingenuous as their mission.

Is that it? I offer a challenge to the Birthers: instead of claiming the high road for denying reality, why don’t you offer evidence of any kind whatsoever to support a claim? And explaining that two people in Africa are claiming to exhibit the hut Obama was supposedly born in does not count, G. Gordon Liddy. Stick to capitalizing on your Watergate crimes by doing TV commercials selling gold to the poor rubes who watch FOX News and believe Obama wants to get rid of the dollar.

I never thought Republicans cared about what random Africans ever said, but this bit of hearsay is accepted blindly and illogically. Who are these people? Where? Did they tell you that themselves? And did they sign an affidavit confirming they weren’t lying? And how do I know that affidavit isn’t a forgery? How do I know these people are actual Kenyans? Why are you hiding their birth certificates from me??

The logic jumps combined with brazen willful bending of facts leave little to be taken seriously. The Birthers do not want honor and truth in government; they want the answer they want to magically come true. It is a mob mentality with a resounding xenophobic appetite that resonates strongly enough to be deeply dispiriting to me.

I recognize the unique obstacle in proving something that the mainstream press refuses to acknowledge — I made a feature film about it, FREE FOR ALL! about the subverting of the 2004 election in Ohio.

Throughout the film, I ask every interviewee “What is truth?” to challenge our assumptions and reassess the standards of what we accept as facts. The responses are surprising, telling, and differ from each individual. I encourage you to watch it and determine your own definition of truth.

While much of the same line of questioning applies, there is something else that gives weight in that case: ACTUAL PROOF. To challenge accepted facts, you must offer credible support. Questioning the validity of evidence with hypothetical scenarios does not disprove the accepted case, nor does it offer any proof otherwise.

To hide behind the cause of seeking truth and honor in government is as disingenuous as their mission.

You go!!! This is all utter codswallop. The constitution says that you have to be a natural born American, which does NOT mean you have to be born in the US. My kid was born in France to a man to whom I was never married and never even had the (possibly dubious) pleasure of living with. I made sure that I hightailed it up to the US embassy to register my son’s birth, and on the certificate that I got from them, it says he is a natural born Yank.

I, too, am a natural born Yank, even though I was born in Morocco. But neither my son nor I could run for president of the US because my kid is too young (there is a clause in the constitution about how old you have to be) and we haven’t lived here for 14 years. There’s also the fact that neither of us has any desire to run for the White House, even if it is situated very close to the Metro in DC — which you wouldn’t even need cos you would be working at home.

And Orly Taitz… honestly. what is she like? You go, guy, and you keep posting ALL the birth certificates you find for Obama and anyone else who’s a natural born American. As soon as I find mine (I just moved house) I’ll scan it and send it to you. It’s got a picture of the Kasbah in Kenitra on it.

Schwarzenegger and Kissinger couldn’t be president because they were foreigners at birth. But a natural born American is someone born of one or two American parents, wherever the mother happens to go into labor — ie Timbuctoo, Ulan Bator or Anacostia in DC. Hawaii is OK, too, and so would Kenya or Zanzibar have been, provided the president’s mum went and got that bit of paper for him, saying what my son’s bit of paper says.

    sorry to be so long-winded.
